Camera Filters: What They Are For and How to Choose the Correct Size

Camera filters are very useful accessories for protecting the lens and changing the way light enters the camera. They can be used by both amateur photographers and professional photographers.

Choosing the right filter depends on the type of photography, the desired effect, and especially the lens size.

1. What is a camera filter for?

A camera filter screws onto the front of the lens. Depending on the type, it can be used to protect the lens, reduce reflections, control the amount of light, or enhance certain colors.

The most common filters are:

  • UV filters;

  • polarizing filters;

  • ND filters;

  • protective filters;

  • close-up filters.

Each filter has a different function and should be chosen based on its intended use.

2. UV or protective filter

The UV filter is often used as permanent protection for the front lens. Although its effect on image rendition is less important today than in the past, it remains useful for protecting the lens from dust, fingerprints, and minor scratches.

It is particularly recommended when shooting outdoors, traveling, or in environments where the lens can easily get dirty.

3. Polarizing filter

The polarizing filter is useful for reducing reflections on surfaces such as water, glass, and metal. It also helps to make the sky more intense and improve contrast in certain situations.

It is widely used in landscape, travel, and architectural photography.

However, it needs to be rotated manually to adjust the effect, so it requires some practice.

4. ND filter

The ND filter reduces the amount of light entering the lens. It is used when you want to use longer exposure times or wider apertures even in bright conditions.

It is very useful for:

  • photographing water with a motion blur effect;

  • creating long exposures;

  • shooting videos with correct timing;

  • shooting wide open in broad daylight.

5. How to choose the correct size

The filter size must match the front diameter of the lens. This value is indicated in millimeters and is often preceded by the symbol Ø.

Example:

  • Ø49 mm;

  • Ø52 mm;

  • Ø58 mm;

  • Ø67 mm;

  • Ø77 mm.

If the lens indicates Ø67, you will need to choose a 67 mm filter.

6. Beware of adapters

If you use step-up or step-down adapter rings, the filter may have a different size than the lens. In these cases, it is important to check the final size of the accessory mounted in front of the lens.

Step-up rings allow larger filters to be mounted on smaller lenses. Step-down rings do the opposite, but can cause vignetting in some situations.

7. Is one filter for each lens better?

Not always. A practical solution can be to buy large diameter filters and use step-up rings to adapt them to smaller lenses.

This choice can be convenient if you use multiple lenses with different diameters, especially for more expensive filters like quality polarizers or ND filters.

Conclusion

Camera filters are useful accessories for protecting the lens and gaining greater creative control over the image. The most important thing is to always choose the correct size, checking the diameter indicated on the lens or on the front-mounted accessory.

A suitable filter can improve the photographic experience and help protect your equipment over time.
